John D. Mikelson
SFC John D. Mikelson retired from the United States Army after 25 years of service (1978-2004) and returned to the University of Iowa in 2005. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History and his Masters in Higher Education in December 2008. John helped to form the University of Iowa Student Veterans Center and was a co-founder/Distance Education Director for Student Veterans of America. John sits on The Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services Council and Homebase Iowa Education Committee. He has served as the The Veterans Affairs Advisor for the Association of Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE), the 2013-14 Chair of the NASPA Veterans Knowledge Community and has been the President of the Johnson County Military Affairs Association since 2005.
With a degree in Finance and Economics Michelle was well suited for her 18 years working in various account and financial settings. She has worked with Wells Fargo as an Assistant Branch Manager, managing sales goals, marketing, customer service, and personnel. As a Senior Finance Manager with American General a leading loan and insurance company managing staff in collections and loans. She understands many aspects of the financial world from banks, hospitals, and private enterprise. Project Management Experience: Vets Helping Vets, creating programs to help homeless veterans attain affordable housing, navigate VA benefits, and acquire needed supplies. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Michelle was a business liaison working to educate businesses on both the laws and benefits of hiring and maintaining their veteran employees. Operation Home Front, she assisted family members of deployed military in a variety of ways, including financial counseling, emotional support, fund raising and developing special programs to support the families. She did extensive fundraising, and planned activities for student veterans on the U of I campus. Military Affairs Association, directed the 2011 and 2012 Veteran’s Day Banquet dinner and programs. Working with event staff and other logistics to create two of the most successful banquets to date. Michelle’s ongoing support for veterans in a variety of programs includes Army Community Partnership Council, English River Outfitters, GIVE Program, Wells Fargo Military Banking which included special accounts and financial advising specifically to veterans, Iowa Troop Support, Honor Flights, and provided support specifically to female veterans. She also participated in the flag project through the U of I Athletics department with the 2012 Veteran’s Day Game flag ceremony.
Mike Hull spent 10 years in the Army; 3 years as a Military Policeman and 7 years as a Warrant Officer flying OH-58 Scout Helicopters. He then went to Iraq for Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991. He got out of the Army in 1996 and moved back to Iowa City with his wife and two kids. He became a mortgage banker specializing in VA Home loans until he began working at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as one of the AirCare Helicopter pilots. Mike joined the Johnson County Veterans Affairs organization and became the President in 1999. He has been a member of the Iowa City American Legion for the past 17 years and spent 3 years as the Post Commander. Mike is also a Member of the Iowa G.I.V.E program (Golfing for Injured Veterans Everywhere). He is currently an EMS Helicopter Pilot for AirEvac Lifeteam and in his free time he is a Licensed Real Estate Broker Associate in the State of Iowa helping veterans and other first-time home buyers to find and buy homes.l

Military Service from 1992 – 2002: Kelly’s MOS was 92G - Food Service Specialist. She prepared food for troops and planned meals each week for the Dining Facility. Kelly attended Basic Training at Ft Leonardwood, MO - AIT Ft Lee, VA - Station locations - Ft Polk, LA, Ft Hood, TX, Camp Carrol Korea, Ft Bragg, NC, Babenhausen Germany. She was deployed to to Kuwait. Kelly has 20 years of Customer Service Experience: She currently works for RR Donnelley as a Customer Service Representative. Kelly is responsible for; order entry, providing sales support, customer contact, resolving customer complaints and expediting shipments. Community Service: American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary. Kelly was the Post Adjutant for the Oxford American Legion, Post 537 for 3 years, where she maintained all Clerical Operations.
